On his 19th Lead started ‘for real’ when he bought his first set of turntables. It was from a brand called JB Systems (Disco 2000). These where belt-driven turntables. For starters this is an OK-turntable: They don’t cost much but will give you the opportunity to exercise around. And when you’re good at these turntables you’ve sure going to like SL’s. Finally it’s a bigger art to play a good set with this kind of turntables than to play a good set on SL’s. As a mixer I found the JB-Systems Pro16x a good choice. Nothing much on it accept for 4 line faders, but that’s all you need to learn the basics.

When these budget-turntables didn’t hold back any secrets anymore Lead was given the opportunity to play for real audience. The first gig was a small party together with W.i.M for friends held in a local club in Gouda (The Groove).

“Technology has fundamentally changed how we search for missing kids,” says Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The hunt for missing children has come a long way since the milk-carton alerts that appeared after the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz in New York City. Etan, who vanished while walking alone to school one morning, was never found, although investigators are combing through a Manhattan basement this week with a possible fresh lead on that his remains or other evidence may be there.

Since Etan disappeared, the lines of communication have improved. When the missing children center first opened in 1984, it could take days before a missing child’s photo was disseminated, Allen says. But now, details about a child or potential abductor can be circulated almost instantaneously through e-mail, text messages, social media and other electronic media.

That’s vital, because “time is the enemy,” when a child vanishes, he says. Law enforcement needs to move quickly to prevent an abducted child from being taken out of town, hurt or even murdered.

“In 1990, our recovery rate for the cases that we intake here at the center was 62%” — and now it’s 97%, he says. “The primary reason for that change is technology.”

Costa Concordia to be salvaged in one piece

MILAN (AP) – Salvage work to remove the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship from its rocky perch off Tuscany, where 32 people died, will begin early next month and is expected to take a year, the Italian owner announced Saturday.

The U.S.-owned company Titan Salvage won the bid to remove the ship, which struck a reef off the tourist-dependent island of Giglio on Jan. 13, after the captain veered off course and steered the liner carrying 4,200 people close to shore in an apparent stunt. Thirty-two passengers and crew members died in the frantic and delayed evacuation. Two of those remain missing.

The salvage plan, which still needs approval by Italian authorities, foresees removing the ship in one piece and towing it to an Italian port, Costa said.

Workers completed the removal of fuel from the Concordia on March 24, and Costa said environmental protection will be a “top priority” during the ship’s removal. The island of Giglio is in fishing grounds and falls within a sanctuary for dolphins.

Islanders have expressed concern that the ship’s presence and salvage work will disrupt tourism, Giglio’s main economic driver.

Giglio Mayor Sergio Ortelli said it is important that the ship be removed in one piece with the least possible impact on the environment, economic and port activities, and that the operation be completed within a year, as foreseen, “so that we can return to normal.”

President Obama sent a videotaped message today to the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan, urging them to stop fighting and negotiate a settlement to their dispute.

“We know what needs to happen — the government of Sudan must stop its military actions, including aerial bombardments,” Obama said. “Likewise, the government of South Sudan must end its support for armed groups inside Sudan and it must cease its military actions across the border.”

“You still have a chance to avoid being dragged back into war, which only leads to one place — more suffering; more refugees; more death; more lost dreams for you and your children,” Obama said.
